University Credit by Examination

acadnav.jpg General Information
Students may receive credit through a variety of testing programs if they have studied a subject independently or have successfully completed college-level coursework for which they are unable to provide an acceptable transcript to this institution.

Effective December 2002, the Executive Director of the Board of Regents approved a revision to not limit credit earned through nationally recognized examinations such as CLEP and AP.

Credit earned at Regental institutions through validation methods other than nationally recognized examinations is limited to a maximum of 32 hours of credit for baccalaureate degrees and 16 hours of credit for associate degrees. Validation credit meeting system general education requirements earned at one Regental institution will be accepted by all Regental institutions (Board of Regents Policy 2:5, May 2003).

If credit is accepted by examination, the permanent record will show: course name -- credit by examination, with an EX grade for the specified number of credits. No entry will be made on the record if the examination is failed. The examination results will not be included in calculation of either the semester or the cumulative grade point averages.

Note: A grade given at or transferred to this university may not be raised by examination for university credit. An examination may not be taken for a lower level course if a student has completed or is currently enrolled in an upper-level course in the same subject.

Students may not receive credit by examination for any course for which they are currently enrolled, have previously attempted, or have completed at a similar level.

Students may be awarded an exemption from taking a course but not receive college credit. This may result from the SDSU policy related to a specific test or credit received by examination from another institution.

Credit earned via examination at SDSU will not automatically transfer to other institutions. Although cut-off scores are set at appropriate levels, each institution develops its own procedures for accepting credit by exam. In some cases, a certain test or score level acceptable at SDSU may not qualify a student for credit at another institution. Students are advised to contact the institution directly to clarify this policy.

Other Ways to Earn Credit at SDSU
Students are eligible to earn credit for proficiency in a foreign language by enrolling in an advanced course and passing with a grade of "C" or higher. Students may earn a maximum of 16 credits in this way. For example, a student passing Spanish 202 with a grade of "C" would then be eligible to receive credit for Spanish 101, 102, and 201.

All students are required to take Speech (SpCm 101) for graduation; however, those with previous training and experience in speech may apply to the Communications Studies and Theatre Department to take an advanced course in Speech and earn credit for 101 concurrently. The disposition of the application for advanced placement rests with the CST departmental administrator. Application must be made by the end of the third semester or prior to the fourth semester of residence.

Other Information About Credit by Examination
To record credit on an SDSU transcript, students must complete an "Application for Placement Credit" form at the Academic Evaluation and Assessment Office. When the application is completed, a per credit fee is collected to cover processing and recording of the credit.

The Academic Evaluation and Assessment Office distributes a copy of the completed form to the Registrar's Office, the student, and the advisor. Allow several weeks for credit to be added to the transcript.

The procedures for having modern language and speech credits placed on the student's transcript requires the student to contact the department, complete a verification form, and apply for the credit in the Academic Evaluation and Assessment Office.

Note on Dual Credit Courses
High school courses for which students received college credit will not be accepted for transfer unless validated by an Advanced Placement or CLEP score that meets Board of Regents guidelines. This requirement is effective for high school courses taken after Spring term 2002.
