Research interests revolve around insect systematics, ecology, and biogeography. Basic taxonomy as well as advanced phylogenetic systematics are proximal in the study of biodiversity. In the laboratory, especially, the beetle families Elateridae and Byrrhidae , and their relatives; special attention is given to the ecology and structural analyses of larvae and pupae as these are highly conducive to the elucidation of phylogenetic patterns and resolution of classifications. Principles of island and fragmented habitat biogeography are examined and tested with regards to faunistic and community patterns of insects on Pacific islands, relict prairie habitats, and bryophyte communities in montane habitats. Dr. Johnson is Curator of the SDSU Insect Museum . Courses taught are general entomology, taxonomy of insects, and service courses. Courses in insect morphology and immature insects taxonomy are under development.
