SD Geographic Alliance

Welcome to the South Dakota Geographic Alliance!
We are classroom teachers, college/university faculty, administrators, friends of geography and YOU…exploring geography together.

The Alliance program is sponsored by the National Geographic Society Education Foundation, with additional public and private support. All 50 states currently are involved in the program, the goals of which are to strengthen and promote geographic awareness.

These goals are:
• Restoring and revitalizing the study of geography in the nation's classrooms. In 1984, South Dakota became the first state to mandate course work in geography as a requirement for high school graduation!
• Enhancing the classroom teaching of geography through educating and empowering teachers, improving curriculum and materials, and promoting new educational technologies
• Supporting state and national education reform by assisting in the development of world standards of what students should know and be able to do in geography

State Alliances employ five interrelated strategies as they work to achieve the foregoing national goals at a local level.

These strategies are:
• Developing a strong, grass roots organization, that involves educators at all levels of instruction and administration
• Becoming actively involved in inservice teacher education.
• Developing public awareness programs
• Becoming involved in educational materials development and dissemination
• Targeting outreach to education decision-making
