Governor's Day

Governor's Day was begun on this campus in 1960 under Colonel Frederic D. Ray, PMS. He traveled here primarily for the purpose of taking part in the awards ceremony by presenting the Governor's Cup, and being seated on the reviewing stand as the cadets marched in review. Initially it was held on the campus green with the inclement weather plan changing it to the "Barn" a few years. It has also been held in the Coughlin Alumni Stadium which provides more seating area. The Governor was hosted at a noon luncheon to which the college president and other VIPs were invited, as well as the Army and Air Force cadre and wives, as well as the cadet colonels. In the 1970s other departments wanted to become part of the Governor's visit to the school, and the military planning of his time was decreased. It remains, however, one of the highlights of the ROTC year on campus with the Governor still reviewing the troops and presenting his award.

As early as 1907 there was an inspection day, and during the early years of Governor's Day it was planned that they coincide. For efficiency of the AFI operation it has now been changed to a separate day.
