What languages can I study at SDSU?
Students at SDSU can major in French, German or Spanish.
First-year courses are also available in Arabic.
Or you can take first- or second-year Lakota via the Direct Digital Network.
|
Where can I study abroad?
Modern Language faculty members organize and lead month-long summer programs in different countries every year. Sometimes other shorter experiences are also available. To learn more about the trips that have been taken over the last several years and to see what’s coming up in the future, click on the Study Abroad link at the left. Plus, if you’d like to spend a semester or a year studying in another country, we’re happy to help you find the best way to fulfill your goals.

How do I get credit for language classes I’ve already taken?
If you’ve taken any language classes in high school, you should take the online placement exam to find out which course you should take. We don’t want you to get lost in a class that’s too difficult or bored in a class that’s too easy! Plus, if you place into a course beyond the first semester, you can buy the credits for previous courses from 101 through 202. That means you could get anywhere from 4 to 14 credit hours for a tiny fraction of the cost of the classes. All you have to do is take the course where you place and pass with a C or better. Then, when the grade has been posted, you can go to the Academic and Assessment office at 9th and Medary to buy your credits. It’s simple!

What else can I be involved with on campus?
There are French, German and Spanish clubs that host movies, talks, educational activities, parties and more. If you get involved, you can help decide what they’ll do! There are also special activities such as the annual Festival of Cultures, the Major/Minor picnic, and more.
Starting this year there is a small language community in one of the residence halls for Spanish students to live and speak the language together. We hope this will soon grow into a thriving community and that we’ll be able to offer it for other languages.
