SDSU Piano Program

Piano Instruction at SDSU

Students may choose piano as the applied major in conjunction with any of the three music degrees offered at SDSU: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music Education, and Bachelor of Science in Music Merchandising.

Piano may also be taken as a music minor, in order to fulfill keyboard proficiency graduation requirements, or to fulfill general education requirements.

Piano lessons are with artist teachers who are active as performers, clinicians and adjudicators throughout the region.

Pianists have many opportunities to perform and grow musically, including weekly forums, accompanying other soloists and choral groups, junior and senior recitals, jazz bands, and studio recital projects.

Associate Professor of Piano
Dr. John Walker

The piano teaching studios each contain two grand pianos and recording equipment. Recitals are held in Peterson Recital Hall, which features a Steinway Model B 7' grand piano. Students may practice on acoustic or electronic pianos and in modular practice rooms .

Group piano classes are taught in the electronic lab with Yamaha Clavinovas and Roland digital pianos. Music theory tutorial, Garage Band, and Finale software is used on the iMac flat screen computers.
