Steven Grives Associate Professor of Music, Dr. Steven Grives is the director of choral activities at SDSU. His duties include conducting the Concert Choir, Madrigal Singers and Statesmen; teaching conducting and applied voice; coaching musical theater productions; and administering the choral program. A native of New York, Dr. Grives received the D.M.A. degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder, the M.M. from the University of Maine, and a B.A. from Bowdoin College.
Dr. Grives is in frequent demand as a guest conductor, adjudicator, clinician, and presenter of scholarly research. Recently, Dr. Grives has conducted regional choral festivals in South Dakota; adjudicated the undergraduate conducting competition at the ACDA National Convention in Miami; presented papers at the College Music Society regional conference at the University of South Dakota and the 4th International Conference of Arts and Humanities in Honolulu, HI. During the summer of 2008, Dr. Grives attended the World Symposium of Choral Music in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Grives is an active member of several professional organizations. He serves as the repertoire and Standards Chair for Male Choirs for the SD-ACDA; he is a board member of the Intercollegiate Mens Choruses Association and editor of the IMC Journal; he is on the editorial board of Melisma, the journal of the North Central Division of ACDA; and a national board member of the National Collegiate Choral Organization. Grives is a member of Chorus America, the College Music Society, and the Pi Kappa Lambda music honor society.
In addition to his work at SDSU, Dr. Grives directs the Dakota Mens Ensemble, and coordinates and conducts the Brookings Community Messiah Sing each December.
