The Latin America Area Studies (LAAS) program enables students to cross college, departmental and discipline lines to pursue, along with the study of Spanish, a coordinated study of geographical, cultural, socio-economic and political life of the Latin American countries.
The program aims to prepare SDSU graduates for the employment opportunities of the 21st Century. The curriculum is tailored for students who desire a Latin American background in conjunction with their disciplinary specialization in majors such as business, economics, political science, history, geography, anthropology, Latin American literature, sociology, agriculture, and ecology, or in one of the other professional colleges at SDSU. Typically participants in the program carry a major in a specific discipline while completing LAAS course requirements listed below. Completion of this program will be noted on a graduates transcript and a certificate will be presented.
This program is designed to prepare students for additional employment possibilities in international business, ecotourism, food and nutrition, nursing, Foreign Service, Peace Corps, the travel industry and a number of other positions with the government, the United Nations and multinational corporations with operations in Latin America.
