Women's Studies Program

The Woman's Studies program is an interdisciplinary program enabling students to select courses dealing directly or indirectly with women, including the development of feminism, women's changing roles in the family, religion, the labor force, and politics.  The minor is particularly useful for students expecting to work with women in social work, couseling, nursing, business, or education.  Eighteen hours with a "C" or better in each course are required for the minor.  The Women's Studies Program Coordinator assists students to personalize their curriculum plans.

Students who decide to minor in Women's Studies can take a variety of courses taught by instructors from several colleges and disciplines. Students take an introductory course, then pick from among several options. Finally, they take a capstone course, Women's Studies 491, Special Problems. In this course the student completes a project relevant to one of the courses taken in the minor. Courses are rotated each semester; occasionally other relevant courses are offered which can be taken with the permission of the Director.

The Woman's Studies Program sponsors campus wide programs and entertainment events each March, which is Women's History Month.

During Women's History Month the Program coordinates a wide variety of activities designed to offer information about women in the professions, women's achievements both past and present, and issues of concern to today's woman. The Program works with other entities on campus to provide entertainment, instruction and discussion about important issues.

The Program is directed by a Coordinator, assisted by a committee representing various colleges. Currently, the Coordinator is Dr. April Brooks,  Professor of History, College of Arts and Sciences. Contact Dr. Brooks at April_Brooks@sdstate.edu or by calling 688-6042. Your comments and suggestions about the Women's Studies Program are always welcome.
