As counselor educators, CHRD faculty are involved in the dynamic and evolving processes of counselor Education, and intend that our efforts will promote a more respectful, just, and caring society. We believe in the dignity and worth of all persons, and work with graduate students to maximize their growth as human beings and professionals in counseling and student personnel. We affirm the uniqueness of all individuals and recognize the contributions of students' strengths and perspectives through the active use of the Constructivist model of education. We seek to empower individuals through identifying and utilizing their strengths. We encourage flexibility of thought, critical analysis of ideas, and sincere acceptance of people of all races, ages, religions, sexual orientation, economic groups and ability levels. We believe in the right of individuals to be self determining within a context of responsibility to others, and believe that counselors and student personnel professionals have a leading role to play in creating environments that enhance the full development of human potential.
The Counseling and Human Resource Development Department prepares individuals with professional knowledge and skills in counseling for use in schools, community agencies, and higher education settings. The School Counseling course of study is designed to meet the certification requirements for South Dakota, while the Agency Counseling course of study meets the requirements of the South Dakota Board of Counselor Examiners. Currently, there are no certification or licensure requirements for Student Personnel Services professionals but students graduating from the CHRD Department are well suited both locally and nationally for professional positions.
