The Lohr Structures Laboratory is located in Crothers Engineering Hall, room 141, on the Campus of South Dakota State University (SDSU).  Covering an area of 4000 ft2, the Lohr Structures Laboratory is a high-bay/strong-floor structural testing facility that is configured to accommodate large-and full-scale test specimens.  Engineering faculty members at SDSU utilize the laboratory for research, teaching, and outreach activities in the field of Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Materials.


Equipment and Tools

·        Large Capacity Hydraulic Actuator : 326 kip Compression/216 kip Tension; ±15 inches Stroke; Static/Low Cycle Fatigue Loading

·        Medium Capacity Hydraulic Actuator: 146 kip Compression/100 kip Tension; ±10 inches Stroke; Static/Low Cycle Fatigue Loading

·        Low Capacity Hydraulic Actuators: 22 kip Tension/Compression; ±5 inches Stroke; Static/Dynamic Loading

·        Reaction Steel Frame: Rated at 250 kips vertical load at 0.14 inches deflection and 150 kips lateral load at 10 inches? above floor

·        MTS Universal Testing Machine:  Rated at 55 kips; Static/Dynamic Loading

·        100-ton Hollow Plunger Cylinders: 10 inches Stroke; available with 1 inch and 1/2 inch diameter prestressing bars

·        72-Channel Megadac Data Acquisition System

·        Sensors, tools, accessories, etc.


One research project that has used the Lohr Structures Laboratory Testing is the testing of full-scale prestressed concrete bridge girders, as shown at the right. Testing in the Lohr Structures Lab
