ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at South Dakota State University invites applications and nominations for a 9-month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (depending on qualifications) in the area of Transportation Engineering beginning in August of 2009 to correspond with the beginning of the fall semester. The department is currently enjoying strong enrollments, new and renovated facilities, growth in graduate education and research, strong ties to its regional constituents, and strong program support. Some of the important attributes of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering are:

- faculty and staff who are deeply committed to the success of students and the department, and are strongly engaged with local/regional employers,
- strong enrollments and student performance on the FE exam,
- faculty and students who are strongly engaged in community service,
- an award-winning ASCE student chapter,
- strong growth in funded research and the graduate program,
- last ABET accreditation visit resulted in NGR review (next one in 2009),
- member of the Mountain Plains Consortium—a U.S. DOT sponsored University Transportation Center Program,
- partnership with the Local Transportation Assistance Program: a Federal Highway Administration and South Dakota DOT co-sponsored program for providing a link between transportation technology and local governments,
- Water & Environmental Engineering Research Center: CEE faculty conduct research, education and outreach activities focused on engineering solutions to water resources and environmental problems,
- opportunities for collaboration with researchers from the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department, Mathematics and Statistics department, GISc Center of Excellence, and the Engineering Technology and Management Department, and
- Recent building addition/renovation providing high quality classrooms, offices and laboratories including the following research labs: the J. Lohr Structures Laboratory (a 4000 ft2 high-bay/strong-floor structural research and testing facility), the HDR Environmental Laboratory, and the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will be expected to teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses, advise undergraduate and graduate students, guide student research, develop externally funded research, and participate in outreach and service activities. Applications are invited in any area of Transportation Engineering; the specialty area is not restricted. However, South Dakota State University is seeking to expand in areas such as Intelligent Transportation System, Transportation Planning, Traffic Engineering and Management, Sustainable Transportation Systems, etc. and these candidates are especially encouraged to apply.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The candidate is expected to have an earned Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or closely related field (or degree granted upon start of position) with a specialization in transportation engineering. The candidate is also expected to have at least one earned degree at any level in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program or provide evidence of teaching coursework at an ABET accredited program. The candidate is also required to possess effective verbal and written communication skills, and interpersonal relationship and motivational skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference will be given to candidates that hold the following qualifications: demonstrated commitment to professional activities; professional engineering registration or the ability to become registered, or the potential for becoming registered; experience in the practice of engineering; the potential to build an externally funded research program; and prior teaching experience at the university level. Preference may also be given to candidates that specialize in the areas of Intelligent Transportation System, Transportation Planning, Traffic Engineering and Management, Sustainable Transportation Systems, etc. Preference may also be given to candidates that can demonstrate the ability to teach complementary coursework in other civil engineering subdisciplines.

SALARY:
Commensurate with qualifications.
