South Dakota State University was founded in 1881, in the Dakota Territory. It is the Land Grant University and has been active in research and technology transfer since the founding. The University is the leading research institution in South Dakota with a Carnegie ranking National Doctoral Research Intensive Institution and ranked in tier III in the US News and World Report annual listing.

Currently, South Dakota State University serves the largest enrollment of all the public universities in South Dakota. The work of the university is carried out on a residential campus in Brookings and at sites in Pierre, Sioux Falls and Rapid City. It also works through fourteen other interactive learning centers throughout the state.

Engineering, Agriculture and the Biological Sciences have been the hallmarks of Land Grant Universities. In addition to those basic fields the university is home to eight other colleges: Arts and Sciences; Education and Counseling; Family and Consumer Sciences; General Studies and Outreach; Honors; Nursing; Pharmacy and the Graduate School.

More than 200 majors, minors and other options are available and more than 6,000 courses are provided. Master's degrees are offered in more than thirty areas, and PhDs are available in eight fields of study.

The student body can participate in Division I Intercollegiate Athletics, over 200 clubs and service organizations and an extensive program of intramural sports activities.

Graduates of South Dakota State University have excelled in numerous fields and have earned honors and positions of distinction including a Nobel Prize, the Office of Governor, and the Office of the Majority Leader of the United States Senate.
