Ihab Halaweish Hometown: Brookings, SD Major: Biology / pre-medicine (2006 graduate)
Career goal: Clinical investigator. Id like to practice medicine and be able to translate my clinical experience into laboratory research. I believe the future of medicine is dependent on the interface between the clinic and the laboratory.
Honors Independent Study project: I investigated the glycation of histones in vitro and possible inhibitors of glycation. This research might play a part in better understanding and possible prevention of diseases like diabetes, atherosclerosis, and Alzheimers.
Awesome internships: Ihab landed a research internship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. He did so well that he was invited back to the NIH for a second summer to continue his work. His undergraduate research at SDSU involved working with bovine viruses and vaccine development in the vet science lab, so his NIH supervisor assigned him to develop a vaccine for the West Nile Virus.
Cool achievement: 2005-06 Barry M. Goldwater Scholar
Currently at: Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine |
